Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Sildenafil Citrate, also known as Viagra, is a popular oral medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It is a selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), a key enzyme in the blood vessel walls, facilitating the absorption and subsequent delivery of blood flow into the penis. This drug is effective in treating erectile dysfunction and enhancing sexual performance.
The primary reason for Viagra’s popularity is its rapid onset of action. It quickly begins to work within 30 minutes of consumption, with peak effects occurring within 5 to 10 minutes. This rapid action can be particularly appealing for men seeking to enhance their sexual performance. Additionally, Viagra’s low cost offers a cost-effective alternative to prescription medications, making it accessible to many men seeking treatment for ED.
When considering Viagra, it is important to understand its potential benefits and potential side effects. Some common side effects include headache, flushing, and dizziness. Additionally, the drug may interact with certain medications, leading to adverse reactions. It is always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication.
Viagra is a medication commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, enabling men to achieve and sustain an erection when sexually stimulated. The drug’s effects on blood vessels in the penis are primarily attributed to its effects on the penis’ vasculature.
Viagra’s effectiveness is influenced by several factors, including its mechanism of action, the drug’s metabolism, and how it interacts with other medications. This balance between the two is crucial for achieving and sustaining an erection. While Viagra may not be a direct aphrodisiac, it can provide relief for some cases of ED, including those who have been previously diagnosed with.
Some common side effects include dizziness, headache, and flushing. However, it’s crucial to note that these are typically mild and temporary. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional if any adverse reactions persist or worsen. If you experience any unusual symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
The primary mechanism of Viagra’s effectiveness is its inhibition of PDE5, which plays a significant role in the production of cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate (cGMP). By increasing cGMP levels, Viagra helps to relax penile muscles, allowing for increased blood flow and improved erectile function. This mechanism of action is particularly beneficial for men who have not responded to phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors alone, as these drugs block PDE5.
By inhibiting PDE5, Viagra allows for greater cGMP levels, which may enhance the relaxation of smooth muscle in the penis. This allows for enhanced blood flow and the ability to achieve an erection when sexually aroused. Additionally, Viagra’s mechanism of action on PDE5 allows for the increased activity of nitric oxide, a molecule crucial for relaxing smooth muscle tissue. This enhanced flow of blood into the penis allows for increased penile blood flow and a firm erection.
By reducing the levels of cGMP, Viagra helps to maintain more robust erections, which may help to enhance sexual performance. However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before using Viagra or any other medication for erectile dysfunction. They can provide personalized guidance and provide personalized advice based on individual health considerations.
The benefits of Viagra extend beyond its effectiveness as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. Its effectiveness may extend beyond its effects on blood flow, allowing men to enjoy longer, firmer erections. Additionally, it may enhance sexual performance, as men may experience heightened sensitivity and confidence in their sexual performance.
By promoting blood flow to the penis, Viagra facilitates the natural process of achieving an erection, which can be an exciting journey for many men looking to improve their sexual health.
